Are composite and porcelain veneers different?

Porcelain veneers are stronger and less prone to staining than composite veneers and provided they are cared for properly, can last many years.

Whereas composite veneers are usually fabricated directly in the mouth by your dentist, porcelain veneers are expertly crafted by a technician in a dental laboratory so they require more appointments before having them fitted.

What are the advantages of porcelain veneers?

If you have chipped, worn, or discoloured teeth, porcelain veneers can provide a long-lasting solution with a natural appearance.

They can also be used to correct minor misalignment of the teeth making them appear straighter too.

Your Veneer Journey With Us

What to expect during your veneer treatment.

As every case is different, you will have an initial consultation appointment where we will spend some time to fully understand your cosmetic wishes and make sure you are suitable for treatment.

Book a consultation

We will carry out a full assessment of your oral health to make sure you are dentally fit before providing you with a bespoke treatment plan detailing all appointments and costs from the outset.

You will then have moulds taken and the veneers made firstly out of wax to see what they might look like. The planned shapes are then transferred to your mouth so we can do a trial smile and make sure you’re happy with the planned outcome. Any adjustments are made at this stage.

Once you are happy, the teeth are then prepared and further moulds taken to be sent to the lab for your bespoke ceramic veneers to be made.

At the final appointment, the porcelain veneers are bonded to your teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

In some cases, porcelain veneers may be fabricated with no drilling of the underlying teeth however in most cases, they require a degree of tooth preparation. If some tooth drilling is required, at Combe Road Dental we will aim to be as minimally invasive as possible to conserve your natural tooth structure.

Generally, veneers require two visits: one to shape the teeth and one to cement these natural looking veneers to the teeth. Between visits, your dentist can place attractive provisional veneers to help prevent sensitivity, allow function, and provide a nice smile. These provisional veneers are designed to be in your mouth for a limited time but should be comfortable until your new veneers are completed.
