Dental Bridges

PORTISHEAD, BRISTOL

When you have a missing tooth, we will discuss all options for tooth replacements with you. One such option is a dental bridge which can be used as an alternative to a denture or implant.
A bridge is a false tooth used to replace a missing tooth. It mimics the shape and appearance of the missing tooth and is cemented to the adjacent teeth which it uses as an anchor.

There are two main types of dental bridges

Traditional “fixed-fixed” bridge

This consists of a false tooth being held in place by dental crowns that have been cemented onto each of the natural teeth adjacent to the missing tooth. This type of bridge is the most common type and can be used when you have natural teeth on each side of the missing tooth. In some cases, the bridge can be made on a single remaining tooth with a false tooth attached to replace the missing tooth. This is known as a fixed cantilever bridge.

Resin Bonded (“Maryland”) bridge

While a traditional bridge uses dental crowns on the adjacent natural teeth, a resin bonded bridge utilises a metal framework which is then stuck on to the back of the adjacent natural tooth/teeth. This type of bridge is a great option when the tooth next to the gap is healthy (does not contain a large filling) and we do not want to drill it down as we want to conserve your natural healthy enamel where possible!
